A late IX century artifact is still an object of speculation. What we know for sure is that it was ordered by king Alfred the Great, but for what purpose, still remains to be deciphered.
The inscription reads AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN, meaning 'Alfred ordered me to be made'.
